Mladá Boleslav lies on the left bank of the middle course of the Jizera. The town is about 50 kilometres north-east of Prague. It is a statutory city.

In 1334, Ješek of Michalovice had the town moved beside the castle. The castle served as barracks and a prison, and a regional museum has been based there since 1970. The Renaissance town hall, dating from 1554 to 1559, extends into Old Town Square from the west, and the square narrows towards the castle.
