Mladá Boleslav lies on the left bank of the middle course of the Jizera. It is around 50 km north-east of Prague.

In 1334, Ješek z Michalovic had Mladá Boleslav moved beside the castle. The castle served as barracks and a prison, and has housed the Mladá Boleslav Region Museum since 1970. The Renaissance town hall, built between 1554 and 1559, projects from the west into the Old Town Square, which narrows towards the castle. The Škoda Museum occupies former factory halls where cars were made until 1928.
