Humpolec lies 23 km north-west of Jihlava, roughly halfway along the D1 motorway between Prague and Brno.

The first reliable written mention of Humpolec dates from 1233. In the 19th century, the town was called the Czech Manchester because of its developed cloth-making industry. About two kilometres from the centre stands the ruin of Orlík Castle, which has also served as a lookout tower since 2014.
