Humpolec lies 23 kilometres north-west of Jihlava. The town is roughly halfway along the D1 motorway between Prague and Brno.

The first reliable written reference to Humpolec dates from 1233. Because of its developed cloth-making industry, the town was known as the Czech Manchester in the 19th century. The ruins of Orlík Castle lie about two kilometres from the centre and have also served as a lookout tower since 2014.
