Benešov lies in the upland area of Benešovská pahorkatina, about 30 km south-east of Prague.
The first written mention of Benešov dates from 1219. The Church of St Nicholas in Benešov, with a separate masonry bell tower on Karlov Hill, dates from the 13th century. Konopiště Castle, founded around 1294, was bought by Franz Ferdinand d'Este in 1887.
