Benešov lies in the Benešovská pahorkatina, about 30 km south-east of Prague. The first written mention of Benešov dates from 1219.
The Church of St Nicholas, with a separate masonry bell tower on Karlov Hill, dates from the 13th century. Konopiště Chateau near Benešov was founded around 1294 and bought by František Ferdinand d´Este in 1887. The Benešov Museum of Art and Design, founded in 1990, is located at Malé náměstí.
