Aš lies in the area called Ašský výběžek, twenty kilometres north-west of Cheb. The first recorded mention of Aš dates from 1270, when the Teutonic Order acquired the church in Aš. By the end of the 18th century, the rapidly growing textile industry had turned Aš into an industrial centre. The museum in Aš was founded in 1892 and is on Mikulášská Street.
