Aš lies in the Aš salient. It is twenty kilometres north-west of Cheb.

The first recorded mention of Aš dates to 1270, when the Teutonic Order took possession of the church in Aš. By the end of the 18th century, the rapidly growing textile industry had made Aš an industrial centre. The museum in Aš was founded in 1892. It is on Mikulášská Street.
