Znojmo lies on the left bank of the Dyje River. It is 65 km south-west of Brno and 83 km north-west of Vienna.
Between 1222 and 1226, Přemysl Otakar I raised Znojmo to royal town status, making it the first town in South Moravia to attain that status. Znojmo is a municipal heritage reserve, and its extensive, multi-level underground complex dates from the 13th to the 17th century. The 12th-century Rotunda of St Catherine, with wall paintings from 1134, survives from the original castle. In Louka, south of Znojmo’s historic centre, Konrád II. Ota founded a Premonstratensian monastery in 1190.
