Žamberk lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains, in the valley of the Divoká Orlice River. The town is 418 metres above sea level.

The earliest documented reference to Žamberk is in a charter dated 1332. Since 1995, its historic centre has been a municipal conservation area. In 1575, Mikuláš z Bubna united the two halves of Žamberk and decided to build a château.
