Vlašim lies on the River Blanice. It is 20 km south-east of Benešov and 40 km north of Tábor. The town is 365 m above sea level.

The first written mention of the small town of Vlašim beneath a fortified manor dates to 1320. The castle at Vlašim is recorded as early as 1303. The chateau houses the Podblanicko Museum. The Auerspergs established the chateau park along the Blanice in 1775 in the English style.
