Tachov lies on the River Mže in the Tachovská brázda depression. The town is 54 kilometres west of Pilsen. Tachov is 20 kilometres south of Mariánské Lázně.

The first reliable written reference to Tachov dates from 1126. The royal town of Tachov was probably founded around 1275. The historic centre is enclosed by town walls measuring about 700 metres in length. Tachov is also home to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, originally built in the Early Gothic style.
