Podbořany lies on the southern edge of the Mostecká Basin. The town is at the confluence of the Dolánecký and Kyselý streams. It is 14 km south-west of Žatec.
The first written mention of Podbořany dates from 1362. The Pseudo-Romanesque Church of the Divine Saviour on Husova Street was built in 1901–1902. The Baroque Church of Saints Peter and Paul dates from 1781.
