Nejdek lies in the Ore Mountains in the valley of the Rolava River. The town is 15 km north-west of Karlovy Vary and lies at an altitude of 568 m above sea level.
The first written mention of Nejdek dates from 1340. The town's history is linked to mining and metal processing. The ruins of a Romanesque-Gothic castle tower have survived. St Martin's Church is mentioned in records from 1354.
