Kaplice lies on the Malše. It is 20 km south-east of Český Krumlov. The town is on the north-western edge of the Novohrad Mountains.
Kaplice was first mentioned in writing in 1257. The town has held town rights since 1382. Since 1990, its historic centre has been an urban conservation area, which includes the deanery church of St Peter and St Paul.
