Hlinsko lies in the valley of the upper Chrudimka. Pardubice is about 32 km away and Chrudim about 22 km. The town is 582 m above sea level.

The first written record of Hlinsko dates to 1349. The town developed into an industrial centre for manufacturing electrical appliances. Since 1995, Hlinecký Betlém has been a heritage reserve of folk architecture.
