The Smědá river flows through Frýdlant.

The town grew around the castle and chateau of the same name, both founded in the 13th century. In 1278, a settlement with a small church and marketplace stood below the castle on the river's bank; Frýdlant became a town in 1537. The pseudo-Renaissance town hall, built between 1892 and 1896, houses the town museum on its second floor.
